A Mother to Us All

This summer, I began a beautiful journey of developing a relationship with Mary, the mother of God. It began when my friend bought me a rosary bracelet that I wore every day. It started with me clutching tightly to the bracelet as if it was my life preserver in times of anxiety and stress. Then I began praying to her every day as “Mom” and eventually joined a household devoted to the Blessed Mother (TTM for life) and consecrated myself to her entirely.

Even as a Catholic, I never understood until recently the role of the Blessed Mother in our lives. I simply saw her as the gentle woman dressed in various beautiful outfits that would appear occasionally around the world to act as the speaking piece of God. I didn’t believe she had significance in my life, and I certainly did not think I needed her to grow closer to Jesus.

That all drastically changed as I began Saint Louis Marie de Monfort’s preparation for Total Consecration to Mary. I slowly began to see concretely the action of Mary in my life when I gave her my prayers and feel distinctly the joy and peace she showered upon me. Most importantly, I began having the most pressing desire to go to adoration, to take time to sit and rest in the presence of Jesus. And that’s because her main role in our lives is to bring us to her Son. When you grow a deeper relationship with Mary, you will grow closer to Jesus as well.

Why should we choose Mary? Why should we devote ourselves to her? Because God chose her. God chose her to play an integral part in our salvation. And He continues to do so every day in our lives, as He pours grace on us through her. Just as God chose her to bring Jesus to the world to save us, we can trust her to bring Jesus into our lives. Among the crashing waves of life, she is our guiding star, the one who holds us steady in the midst of the storm and leads us to our anchor, our salvation: her Son.

St. Louis de Monfort describes this beautifully in one of my favorite quotes: “If, then, we establish solid devotion to our Blessed Lady, it is only to establish more perfectly our devotion to Jesus Christ, and to provide an easy and secure means for finding Jesus Christ.  If devotion to Our Lady removed us from Jesus Christ, we should have to reject it as an illusion of the devil; but so far from being the case, devotion to our Lady is, on the contrary, necessary for us…as a means of finding Jesus Christ perfectly, of loving Him tenderly, of serving Him faithfully.”

Now I picture Mary as my mother, who picks me up when I’m dirty and tear stained, looks me in the eyes and kisses me on the cheek, cleans me up, and presents me to the Father and her Son. She fights for us. She battles for us. She gives us the graces everyday to grow closer to her Son.

If you desire to know Jesus, seek to know Our Lady. Pray to the Blessed Mother. Give her your heart for she will not keep it for herself but put it in the loving hands of her Son every time. She wants nothing more than to bring you to Jesus.
